CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The contents of a Florida storage unit were about to be auctioned off because of unpaid rent until the site manager got an unusual call. The woman who owned the unit told the manager her grandmother's body was inside the unit.
After hearing from the granddaughter, management at the storage facility opened the unit, found a blue handmade coffin and called police.
Police in Clearwater, Florida say the family has rented three units since 1985 and just recently got behind in the monthly rent.
"The company did the proper thing, to say hey, we're getting ready to clear out your storage unit. We're gonna put it up for auction," said Joelle Castelli of the Clearwater Police Department.
Police were told that when the storage company informed the owner that the items inside the unit were going up for auction the granddaughter said she was told by family members that her grandmother was in one of the units.
It turns out the woman's grandmother died in 1995. Police confirm that there were remains in the unit. Apparently the woman had been put into storage by her daughter. That daughter died recently and confessed on her deathbed that she put her mother's body into storage.
Before her death, the daughter could have been charged with Illegal disposal of a body. Since the woman who is responsible is dead it's unlikely any charges will be filed.
