Some of the hockey equipment found near Wayzata High School.
GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- Of all the questions 30-year old Jen Onsum was asking Friday night, none had easy answers.
"We just don't understand why someone would do this," she asked.
Onsum suffers from spinal muscular atrophy and plays in the Minnesota Power Hockey League. It's a group made up of disabled men and women in wheel chairs who for the past 15 seasons have done what they love, play hockey.
But after what happened this week, that love is in jeopardy.
On Wednesday night or early Thursday morning, someone stole their storage trailer that was chained and parked in the Carburetion & Turbo Systems' parking lot in Shakopee, and with it thousands of dollars worth of donated equipment.
"The guys who picked up said it was just in a big heap, most of it laying on the road," said Barb Beise, Wayzata High School's assistant activities director.
Custodians with Wayzata High School found some of the equipment on a rural road near the school Wednesday.
But the trailer, along with custom made goals, a sound system, and scoreboard are still missing, estimated to be worth $8,000.
"It's pretty sad to think that someone would do this. They obviously did not know what was in it and how valuable it was," said Onsum.
Since they're a non-profit, the league will have to raise the money to pay for what's missing in time for the start of their season in April.
And that's just the half of it.
Onsum says someone stole one of their spare trailers with equipment in it four years ago. They ate the cost then, but can't afford to now. That's why these athletes, who every day break down barriers, hope this second time around doesn't break their season.
"We're just hoping something knows something, someone can help us out," said Onsum.
The trailer is described as a white, 6 x 12' fully-enclosed single-axle trailer with a blue PowerHockey Logo on both sides.
