ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. - Sunday afternoon provided more proof that the hockey community in Minnesota is more like one, big family.
"It's an unbelievable turnout," said former Minnesota Wild player Wes Walz. "People have really stepped up for the family after everything that has gone on."
The event pulled together family, friends, and supporters all rallying behind Jack Jablonski. Raffles and other fundraisers provided an opportunity to financially support the 16-year and his family while attendees had a chance to mix it up with former Wild players, the Gopher hockey teams, and even a U.S. Olympian.
"This just shows that the hockey community can come together like this," said Natalie Darwitz, a member of the U.S. women's hockey team. "It's a great cause for a great person."
The entire Benilde-St. Margaret's hockey team volunteered at the event held inside the high school's gym. For them, this season has been full of its ups and downs. They now play with "Jabs" in their hearts and play much safer thanks to recent rule changes in high school hockey.
"We had several practices where it was drilled in our heads that you have to follow the new rules," says Tanner Ahlborn, a junior on the team. "It's much safer now."
Close to 500 people attended the event and the money raised will help fund the rigorous rehab Jack is undergoing at the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute in Minneapolis.
