Iowa City, IA (Sports Network) - Matt Gatens scored 18 points to lead Iowa in
a 63-59 comeback win over Minnesota in a Big Ten tussle from Carver-Hawkeye
Arena.
Roy Devyn Marble joined Gatens in double figures by netting 12 for Iowa
(12-11, 4-6 Big Ten). Zach McCabe led the Hawkeyes with 10 rebounds as they
snapped a three game losing streak.
Minnesota (16-7, 4-6) was paced by Ralph Sampson III who scored 13 points.
Julian Welch added 12 points and six assists and Austin Hollins chipped in 11
for the Golden Gophers who had won four of their previous five.
Minnesota led 27-24 at the half by shooting 41.7 percent from the floor
including 4-of-8 from three point range. Iowa fell behind shooting just 34.5
percent and 1-of-5 from beyond the arc.
In the second half the Hawkeyes had the advantage shooting 40.7 percent from
the floor while Minnesota put in just 37.0 percent of its field goal attempts.
The Golden Gophers led 45-36 with 11:53 remaining but the Hawkeyes stormed
back tying the game at 50-50 with 5:12 remaining. Minnesota then pulled ahead
again leading 59-54 with 3:24 left. Iowa then stiffened on defense and ended
the game on a 9-0 run, capped by a Gatens layup with eight seconds left in
regulation, to claim the win.
Iowa controlled the inside in the victory outrebounding Minnesota 39-35 and
outscoring the Golden Gophers 30-10 on points in the paint. Iowa also
outscored Minnesota 15-0 on fast break points.
