ST. PAUL, Minn -- A cluster of uniform-clad children crane their necks to get a look at a books' pages as an older student reads to them from in the school's library.
"I do not like green eggs and ham, I do not like them Sam I am!"
St. Agnes Catholic school is different than most schools, in that the elementary, middle school, and high school students are all taught in the same building.
Now, while some high school students might not see that as an advantage, St. Agnes senior Annie Montoya wouldn't have it any other way. Surrounded by elementary students, Annie has them wrapped around her finger as she reads from the Dr. Seuss classic, 'Green Eggs and Ham'.
"My job right now is with kids", says Annie. "And, I want to be a Special Education teacher so, any experience I can get is good, and I think I'm good at it, so."
Annie's pretty good at school too.
She carries a 3.96 GPA, is in her 3rd year in the National Honor Society, and she's this year's NHS president at St. Agnes.
But, it's Annie's work with others, a labor of love that starts at home with her sister who has special needs, that truly sets her apart.
"I've worked with her my whole life and she's really special to me", says Annie. "I really feel like if I could be a special ED teacher I can make a difference with people like her."
Annie was actually under-the-weather on the day of our visit, but she didn't know that the TV crew in her classroom knew that, and Annie's day was about to take a dramatic turn.
"Take Annie Montoya here", said the reporter who was addressing the class. "See, Annie didn't feel well today and she didn't want to come to school but her mom made her come to school. Why? Because we have something for you, Annie. We have a check for $111.00, that says you are an Academic All-Star, and even when you're sick you have to come to school, right?
A stunned Annie could only answer with, "Yeah".
Annie works two jobs outside of school, both of them with people who have special needs. But in this case, it seems Annie hasn't chosen her path so much as it seems to have chosen her.
"I'm ready", says Annie. "I'm even ready to start my career. I just can't wait to make a difference."
Some would argue that Annie Montoya is already making a difference.
