BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. -- More than 100 families are scrambling for backup after a state agency shut down a Brooklyn Center child care center.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services issued a temporary immediate suspension of Arena Early Learning Center's license, citing "an imminent risk" of harm to children at the center.

One of the violations cited by state inspectors is a failure to comply with sudden infant death syndrome training requirements.

They also found that hazardous materials were accessible to children in the daycare.

Jerry Kerber of the State Department of Human Services tells KARE 11 that the goal of the investigation is to shut down Arena Early Learning Center "for good."

Parents are advised to use an available referral service to find alternative arrangements for daycare.

The action took effect Wednesday. The center opened in 2004 and is licensed to offers both day and evening care for up to 88 children, from infants through school age.

The department says it's only the third time it's taken such action in over 10 years against a Minnesota child care center.

The agency says the center had been operating while appealing an earlier license revocation order.
