MINNEAPOLIS -- It has been a season of firsts this winter and add outdoor ice rinks closing up shop in early February to the list.

On Thursday, Minneapolis Parks and Recreation closed all 42 of its outdoor ice rinks. Spokesperson Dawn Sommers said this winter is by far the worst ever for outdoor skating on parks rinks.

Sommers said city officials will go to the sites on Monday to re-evaluate the ice but with the temperatures scheduled to stay near the level they currently are, it is unlikely that the ice will change for the better.

In Edina, outdoor rinks closed Wednesday and those too will be re-evaluated on Monday. If the rinks remain closed for the rest of the season, it will be the shortest outdoor rink season in that city in at least 34 years.
