WHEATON, Minn. - A 50-year-old western Minnesota man is dead after falling through the ice while ice fishing Sunday.
The Traverse County Sheriff's Department says it happened on Mud Lake near Wheaton. The family of Charles Krauth notified deputies around 10:30 p.m. when he did not return from an ice fishing trip.
A search party located Krauth's pickup truck parked by the White Rock Dam. They followed the tracks of his 4-wheeler out onto the lake, and eventually located his ATV and his dog. Nearby was a hole in the ice.
Four hours after the search began Krauth's body was located in 7 feet of water.
Subsequent measuring determined that ice in that area of Mud Lake was less than one inch thick.
