MINNEAPOLIS - While we Minnesotans' have been dealing with one of our top ten warmest January's, the real Old Man Winter has been hiding out in Alaska.  Northern and Central Alaska are shivering with a top ten coldest winter.  Just how cold is a top 10 ranking in Alaska?

In Nome, the average monthly temperature for January was -16.6 degrees, making it the coldest January ever for that location.

In Fairbanks, the January average was -26.9 degrees, which comes in at 19 degrees below the average.  But even that wasn't enough to top the list... it goes in the books as the fifth coldest January on record for Fairbanks.

Remember those are just the averages!  It wasn't uncommon for Alaskan cities to wake up to 60 below mornings!
