ALEXANDRIA, Minn. - Four college-aged woman are dead following a car accident on Interstate 94 west of Alexandria.

The crash happened just after 3 p.m. on Monday near milepost 95, which was being coated in snow at the time.

The State Patrol said the woman were in a four-door sedan headed west on I-94 when the car spun out of control and crossed the freeway median. The car was then broadsided by an SUV, which then hit a third car.

All four women were wearing seatbelts.

There are no cable barriers along the stretch of 94 to prevent vehicles from going into the opposite lanes of traffic.

A veteran State Patrol lieutenant who had been at the crash scene said this one was hard.

"Yep, yeah it is. Been at this for 32 years and this is one of the worst that I've seen, and I've seen a lot of 'em." remarked Lt. Dan Vickmark.

Names of the victims could be released tomorrow.

Three people in the other vehicles were treated at a local hospital and released.

All lanes of eastbound I-94 were closed to traffic following the crash. The lanes were opened a few hours later after the scene was cleared.
