DULUTH, Minn. - Snow, heavy at times continues in Duluth, is currently enhanced by Lake Superior moisture this afternoon. Although the intensity has lightened up over the past few hours, light accumulations continue.
A Blizzard Warning continues for the Duluth area with winds gusting 50 to 60 mph. With all the blowing and drifting, measuring the snow is a difficult task but current estimates are near a foot! Continued snow will likely bring totals up to 16 inches.
Despite the enthusiasm that arrives with a batch of fresh snow, Spirit Mountain in Duluth has closed due to sustained winds of 40 miles per hour that make operating the chairlifts extremely dangerous.
Administrators at the University of Minnesota Duluth and the Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College decided to close Wednesday, as did many other schools in the region.
In fact, the city of Duluth is urging residents to simply stay home, and keep off the roads due to degrading weather conditions.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation announced that U.S. Highway 2 has been closed in both directions Wednesday due to weather conditions. The closure is between WIS 112 and WIS 13 in Ashland. They say there are no suggestions detours at this time.
