PRIOR LAKE, Minn. - House fires can start many different ways, but there are little things you can do around the home that could mean the difference between life and death.

KARE 11's Boyd Huppert brought us two stories about house fires this week. First he demonstrated how to prevent a kitchen fire, and second, showed us how important sprinklers are to your home.

Some communities offer fire safety programs through their fire departments, including Spring Lake Park.

Chief Nyle Zikmund with Fire Station One in Spring Lake Park spoke live with KARE 11 Sunrise about their Home Safety Challenge program.

People can go to the website and take the online home safety challenge.

Residents of these communities also have the opportunity to sign up to have a fire department member come to their home for a personal home safety survey. It is free and protected by data privacy.

The survey takes approximately 1.5 hours. It offers suggestions about how to make your home safer.

Firefighters will install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for residents who need them. These are provided free through grants.

Programs like this are offered by many other fire departments, and you can contact your local department, to inquire about what's available in your community.
