ROSEVILLE, Minn. - Straw bale gardening is a fun new way of growing vegetables and it turns out the pioneer is right here in the Twin Cities. Joel Karsten has been working on this concept for over a decade and it is amazing how well it works.
His Facebook page Learn to Grow Straw Bale Gardens has over 16,000 followers from around the globe! He is writing a book and this trend is literally growing as well.
Straw Bale Gardening is simply a different type of container gardening. The main difference is that the container is the straw bale itself and is held together with two or three strings. Once the straw inside the bale begins to decay the straw becomes "conditioned" compost that creates an extraordinary plant rooting environment. Getting the straw bales conditioned is an essential part of the process, and should be started by the first week in May for most parts of the country.
Thanks to Joel and we wish him a great harvest and lots of good book sales!
