MINNEAPOLIS -- Ted Mondale has been selected as chief executive of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority.
The five-person committee was named by Gov. Mark Dayton and Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak last week. That committee met for the first time at the Metrodome Friday and hired Mondale as their new CEO.
Headed by Mondale and Chairwoman Michele Kelm-Helgen, the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority will oversee the design and construction of a new $975 million stadium for the Minnesota Vikings.
As they do that, Rybak says one of the goals will be to create the idea of a "People's Stadium" like Gov. Dayton discussed during the negotiation process.
"We're building a place where people will bring lots of different memories and have lots of different experiences for lots of different things," Rybak said Friday. "We don't even know what some of those activities will be in the future. What's the tractor pull in 2050 going to be. I don't know, but we need to anticipate that."
The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority will also eventually run the Metrodome once the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission is phased out.
Mondale, the son of former Vice President Walter Mondale, has been heading the Commission for the past year. He is also a former state senator.
Chairwoman Kelm-Helgen is leaving her job as one of Dayton's top aides.
