Man presumed dead after falling into St. Croix River

PRESCOTT, Wis. - Search crews on the waters of the St. Croix River near Prescott, using sonar to search for a man presumed drowned after falling off a dock Wednesday night.

Pierce County dispatchers were notified just after 8:15 a.m. that 65-year-old Merriett Maul, of Welch, Minn., fell off a dock about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. Merriett was docking his boat with his wife and friends when he fell between the boat and the dock and didn't come up.  

The Pierce County Water Patrol attempted to locate the victim using both sonar and a diver team but was unsuccessful. 

Searchers were scheduled to get back on the water at 8 a.m. Thursday.

This incident is still under investigation.
