MAPLEWOOD, Minn. - A 32-year-old Fitchburg, Wis. man faces second-degree assault charges after the brutal beating of his pregnant girlfriend and a number of staff at a Maplewood hospital, according to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office.
According to the complaint, Maplewood police were called to St. John's Hospital at 1575 Beam Ave. on Thursday after Myers was accused of beating his girlfriend, who was 8 and a half months pregnant.
Witnesses said Myers smashed a vase over the head of the victim and forced her backwards into a bathtub.
As staff responded to her screams, they said Myers hoisted himself off the ground using the shower curtain rod and then stomped on the woman's chest and stomach multiple times.
Staff was able to force the defendant out into the hallway, enduring blows as they went, the complaint said.
Once out in the hallway, Myers confronted and punched a nursing assistant in the face multiple times, witnesses said.
The defendant's girlfriend, who had been hospitalized since June 9 for pre-term labor, gave birth via emergency Caesarian section shortly after receiving treatment for her injuries.
"This was an unspeakably violent act toward a pregnant mother and several hospital staff members," said Ramsey County Attorney John Choi. "Based on what we know, the nursing assistant, mother and her newborn baby are thankfully recovering from this attack. We will pursue this case vigorously."
Myers will appear in court on Monday, officials said.
