GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - Our heat wave continues without the hope of a cool down through this week. Monday marks our fourth day at 90+ degrees and we stay in this zone for another four days until the temperatures break Saturday.
Today was one for the books, beating the 96° record that was set back in 1911.
We can look forward to a slightly cooler weekend in the 80s.
It's not just the heat that we are dealing with, but also the humidity. Dew points in the 70s Monday represent a saturated, tropical-like airmass in place. To put it simply... it feels muggy!
It's that combination of heat and humidity that has led the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory for Monday afternoon and evening. Hennepin and Ramsey counties have been upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning, which is a step above a Heat Advisory. Both continue until 10:00pm. Heat Indices measure what the temperature "feels like" and are expected to reach 100° to 110º Monday afternoon.
Although some cloud cover might improve the heat index of Tuesday, we can expect heat alerts through the week. So stay inside if you can, take breaks in the shade and drink plenty of water.
Here's the details on our heat advisory from the National Weather Service:
- Heat advisory remains in effect from noon Monday to 10 p.m. Monday evening.
- The hot and humid conditions will lead to a heightened risk of heat-related stress and illness. If you must be outside be sure to drink plenty of water and remain hydrated.
- Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light-weight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
- To reduce risk during outdoor work schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency... call 911.
