MINNEAPOLIS - A chemical spill forced the evacuation of Smith Hall on the East Bank of the University of Minnesota's Twin Cities campus on Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said the building at 207 Pleasant St. S.E. was evacuated at about 2:50 p.m. after about 12 liters of chemicals, including acetone, mineral oil, methanol and carbon disulfide, were spilled.

The building will remain vacant until the area is cleaned up and secured, officials said. They said they expect the building to opened for normal operations on Thursday morning.

Smith Hall houses the university's Department of Chemistry, Glass Technology Services and Printing Services.

University of Minnesota Police and University Environmental Health and Safety responded. The Minneapolis Fire Department assisted.
