FORT SNELLING, Minn. - Authorities have exhumed the body of Minnesota veteran Edward John Redhead after the discovery of his disturbed grave at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Thursday.
Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek says the body of the World War II veteran was found by a maintenance worker who discovered a large amount of dirt disturbed in and around Redhead's grave.
Stanek would not say if the casket had been tampered with or the man's body disturbed. He said the Redhead's family has been contacted.
"This is the final resting place and a place of honor for the men and women who have served our country," said Stanek on Thursday. "For anyone to desecrate a gravesite here it is not only a disturbing crime, it is extremely disrespectful to all military veterans and their families."
Anyone with information is urged to call the Sheriff's Office at 763-525-6216 or call 911.
