ANOKA, Minn. - A 24-year-old unsolved murder case is getting new attention from the Anoka County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators will meet with reporters Monday afternoon in an attempt to jar the public's memory in an attempt to solve the 1987 murder of Armonjean Mason.

A motorist saw Mason's body laying by the side of Lake Drive in the city of Columbus in the early morning hours of December 2, 1987. Mason had been strangled, brutally beaten and stabbed.

Homicide investigators worked the case through 1988 and identified five men who were identified as persons of interest. Eventually, leads and evidence dried up and no charges were ever filed.

In recent months, investigators from the Minnesota Bureau of Apprehension (BCA) reopened Mason's murder file, conducting DNA tests on physical evidence that did not exist in 1987. The BCA was able to obtain a Y chromosome DNA profile. While not as conclusive as other DNA results, the profile was consistent with one of the men identified back in 1988.

While not a strong enough piece of evidence to file charges, or to even label the man a suspect, the Anoka County sheriff's office hopes that with renewed public interest in the case somebody may come forward with information that will help investigators make their case.

"It is important for law enforcement to remain vigilant, even as leads on cases diminish," said Anoka County Sheriff James Stewart in a written release. "The victim's families need for justice never expires."
