ST. PAUL, Minn. -- If you're not so "Minnesota nice" when you get behind the wheel of your car, be aware; law enforcement is looking for you.
"Multiple agencies are working on a partnership to try to reduce the injuries and the aggressive driving we have on the road right now," Lt. Robert Zak with the Minnesota State Patrol said.
Several state agencies including public safety, transportation, health and the State Patrol have kicked off a campaign which includes a public service announcement currently running on TV.
The spot gives a slightly comical look at how ridiculous aggressive behavior can be, but what they say isn't funny is the numbers linked to that behavior. Last year alone, there were 61 deaths and 6,791 injuries on Minnesota roads directly related to aggressive driving.
"Speeding, tailgating, people cutting other cars off, multiple lane changes in quick succession, driving on the shoulders, honking, pounding on the steering wheel, giving gestures," Lt. Zak said describing some of the behaviors he sees on a daily basis.
The new effort is also giving people some ideas on how to deal with drivers who display those behaviors:
• Get out of their way
• Stay Calm
• Do not challenge them
• Avoid eye contact
• Ignore gestures and don't return them
• Buckle up. A seat belt is important to maintain proper seating position in the case of abrupt driving maneuvers
• Report aggressive driving: Call 911 - provide vehicle description, license number and location
