MINNEAPOLIS - The Minneapolis Police Department has installed an unwanted drug drop box at the Fifth Precinct located at 3101 Nicollet Avenue South.

This box will allow people to anonymously dispose of unwanted medications. The box is a collaboration between the police department and The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators.

According to the Minneapolis Police Department the Twin Cities has seen a 30% increase in the number of overdose deaths compared to this time last year. Some of these cases have been attributed to people getting prescription drugs from family and friends or taking them from medicine cabinets.

Minnesota state law says that law enforcement can only handle prescription drugs after they have been discarded by the patient to whom they were prescribed.
