ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Republicans Mike Parry and Allen Quist have tossed insults like "unelectable" and "hypocritical" back and forth as they compete in a GOP primary in southern Minnesota.
The winner of the Aug. 14 primary will challenge Democratic Rep. Tim Walz in the 1st District, an independent-minded swath of the state that includes Rochester and Worthington.
Republican primary voters are looking for the best match against Walz, who won his seat in a 2006 upset and has survived two challenges since then.
Much of the race between Parry and Quist has focused on comments each made in the past.
Republican activists deadlocked between Quist and Parry at an endorsing convention in April, sending the decision to primary voters. Republicans last had a primary for the congressional seat in 2008.
