MINNEAPOLIS -- As part of their effort to reduce crime downtown, Minneapolis city leaders are trying to shut down two nightclubs.
The owners of Envy Nightclub and Bootleggers have been informed that the city is seeking to revoke their liquor licenses.
Authorities say the two clubs are the source of many problems on weekends. Bootleggers was cited for serving alcoholic beverages after 2:30 a.m. among other violations. City officials documented several violations against Envy, including failing to prevent drug use, failing to request help for a customer who was assaulted by an employee and not serving food on Sundays as dictated by state and local laws.
Local officials say focusing on nuisance businesses will help the overall business climate of the area.
"We have many well-run businesses and bars and clubs in Minneapolis," said Councilwoman Elizabeth Glidden. "By focusing our efforts we want to ensure that those who are well-managed can thrive, while we take appropriate action for those businesses that have problems."
The crackdown is part of a three-week-old effort by Minneapolis officials to cut down on violent crime on weekend nights. Authorities say the initiative is working. They've seen a 45 percent drop in crimes like assaults and robberies in the past three weeks. That's compared to the three weeks before the effort began.
According to the city, Bootleggers and Envy have until August 20 to decide whether to withdraw their license and close their doors, or whether to appeal the action.
