MINNEAPOLIS - Just in time for football season, Vikings fans heading to games have a new option for street parking.

Crews just finished replacing all the old parking meters around the Metrodome with 1,700 new solar powered parking pay stations.

The new meters allow drivers to pay with credit cards instead of quarters. According top the city's website, the meters will take Visa and Mastercard.

The parking pay stations also will have variable parking rates for special events. The city says that means some metered spaces will have non-event rates as low as a quarter an hour, making it less expensive for people to use for most of the year. Drivers planning to park around the Metrodome should look for special event rate stickers on meter space signs.

Variable rates in place around the Metrodome are similar to ones near Target Field.
