Fridley police officer dies in off-duty motorcycle accident

FRIDLEY, Minn. - Police in Fridley are mourning the loss of an officer who died Tuesday in a motorcycle accident.

Officials say 38-year-old Barry Pankonin died at approximately 3:30 p.m. in an accident near his home in Plymouth. He was not on duty at the time of the accident.

Plymouth police say officers responded to a call just after 3 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found Pankonin had sustained serious injuries. Pankonin was taken to North Memorial Hospital where he died from his injuries.

Plymouth police say Pankonin had been alone on the motorcycle and was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Pankonin was a member of the Fridley Police Department for more than 12 years. He also served with the Army National Guard.

Fridley police did not release any other information about the accident, but did say no other vehicles or persons were involved.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
