WADENA, Minn. - Her spirit was willing but an 8-year-old Minnesota girl's cancer-ravaged body simply could not last long enough to make her dying wish come true.
Jane Fiemeyer was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia in August of 2011 and had been in and out of hospitals battling the cancer in the months since.
Her wish was to meet the guys from the boy band Big Time Rush and after doctors told Jane's mother that she would not win the fight, Jil Fiemeyer became determined to make that dream come true.
She started a social media campaign that took off like wildfire, and eventually led to the band arranging a Skype video chat with Jane for Thursday afternoon. There were even reports that Big Time Rush was rearranging their tour schedule so they could visit her in person Monday.
It was not to be. Jane passed away quietly early Thursday afternoon at her home in Wadena just hours before her scheduled video chat with her favorite band.
A family spokesperson said Jane did get a chance to view a video made specially for her by Big Time Rush, and it made her very happy.
Jane's family expected that she would have at least a week at home to say her goodbyes, but she made it just one day. They want people to know that their special girl knew about all the efforts of people she didn't even know who were determined to help make her wish come true... and it inspired her.
A fund has been set up in Jane's memory. It is called the "Princess Warrior Fund" at First National Bank in Wadena. The donated money will help the family and go towards cancer organizations.
Jane raised more than $2,100 for the organization Cure Search, which supports cihldren's cancer research, by making the colorful duct tape wallets. You can order one and donate whatever amount you'd like by emailing walletsfromjane@gmail.com. Family and friends have now formed "Team Jane" and will now continue to make them in her memory.
