VIRGINIA, Minn. - A Babbitt man accused of stabbing a 3-year-old girl he was babysitting has pleaded guilty to assault.
Twenty-seven-year-old Derek Klingfus pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of second-degree felony assault.
The Mesabi Daily News reports Klingfus is expected to get more than six years in prison when he's sentenced Oct. 11.
A police officer responding to the scene last January shot Klingfus after he displayed a knife and later allegedly held it to the girl's throat.
The girl suffered a serious knife wound to her body. The St. Louis County Attorney's Office later ruled the officer's use of force was justified.
