ST. PAUL, Minn. - Huge protests couldn't stop a law limiting collective bargaining for public employees. A recall election couldn't stop it either. But a Dane County Circuit Judge hopes he can.
On Friday, Judge Juan Colas ruled that the law was unconstitutional because it violated workers rights to free speech, free association and equal protection.
Governor Scott Walker, who is visiting Minnesota this week, spoke out for the first time on Sunday.
"We believe that ultimately, just as an appellate court ultimately overruled the decision of a Dane County circuit court judge last year...the Supreme Court will uphold these as constitutional," Walker said.
The Governor said he will appeal the decision and Wisconsin's attorney general will find a way to enforce the union law during the process. Governor Walker claims since the law went into effect local governments have seen savings of more than a billion dollars.
While union leaders see this latest strike down as a win Governor Walker brushed it off saying it's time to move on.
"For most people in our state this issue has been resolved," he said.
