EAST BETHEL, Minn. - Anoka County officials say two people were killed in an accident involving a motorcycle and an SUV Sunday night and a woman is in custody.

When officers arrived on the scene just after 7:30 p.m. at County Road 22 (Viking Boulevard) and Rendova Street, they found two occupants of a motorcycle were deceased.

Anoka County Sheriff James Stuart says in a news statement the driver of the SUV "had indications of intoxication" and was arrested for criminal vehicular homicide.

The 42-year-old driver of the SUV from Bethel remains in custody but has not been charged.

Investigators say the scene showed that the motorcycle was braking heavily in its traffic lane before striking the SUV on its driver's side door.

"The SUV driver can't give a viable explanation to why she was directly perpendicular in the lane of traffic," said Commander Paul Sommer with the Anoka County Sheriff's Office. "I don't know that she was trying to mislead us, but she doesn't have a good explanation. I can speculate she was trying to do a U turn, but until an accident report, that is just speculating."

A 48-year-old man from St. Francis and a 46-year-old woman from Big Lake were the occupants of the motorcycle that died on the scene.

Dave Bredeson lives near the scene of the crash and tried to save the couple thrown from the bike. "I heard a big boom, and went running," said Bredeson.

He called 911 and checked their pulses, and says he tried to comfort them. "But they didn't make it," he said. "I feel bad, you know, I couldn't do something to save one of them at least. Hopefully God is with them now and took them to a better place."

Bredeson says he was also concerned after seeing two other motorcycles with the couple before they crashed. 'The other two turned around and came back, and all I heard was "oh my God," they did a U-turn and took off west down Highway 65,' said Bredeson.

Sommer says anyone with information regarding the motorcyclists spotted leaving the scene should contact the Anoka County Sheriff's Office.

The accident scene is being reconstructed by the Minnesota State Patrol.

Commander Sommer says he believes there have been four fatalities on County Road 22 this year. "That is a dangerous stretch of roadway, no question about that, there have been a number of fatalities on that road this year. This is just the latest one," he said.

Bredeson says speeding has long been a problem on the road.
"It just got redone and I still think it's too dangerous. It's 55 miles an hour and no one usually ever follows the speed limit. You are talking 60 to 65, it's too fast a road," said Bredeson.

The identities of the victims will be released by the Anoka County Medical Examiner's Office.
