ST. PAUL, Minn. - Mn/DOT is launching a Share the Road pedestrian safety campaign to increase safety for pedestrians in the state.

October is typically the deadiest for walkers followed by november and December, and 2012 has already been deadly. So far this year there have been 23 pedestrian deaths in Minnesota in 2012. There were 16 at this time in 2011.

Mn/DOT officials urge people to follow the Minnesota crosswalk law and exhibit safe walking and driving behaviors. This includes pedestrians making eye contact with drivers before proceeding into the crosswalk and motorists always being prepared to stop for crossing pedestrians at every corner.

To launch the Share the Road program, Mn/DOT is holding crosswalk events in five Minnesota cities Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 3 to 6 p.m. They are at the following locations:

Twin Cities
Minneapolis - Hennepin Avenue South/West Lake Street
Minneapolis - Chicago Avenue South/East Lake Street
St. Paul - West Seventh Street/Kellogg Boulevard West

Greater Minnesota
Duluth - Lake Avenue/Superior Street
St. Cloud - Fifth Avenue South/Second Street South (Highway 23)
Rochester - Second Street South/Broadway (Highway 63)
