CROOKSTON, Minn. - A Minnesota State Trooper is recovering after his squad was struck by another vehicle while he was on duty Tuesday night.

Trooper Dean Smith of Thief River Falls was patrolling on Highway 2 near Crookston just before 8 p.m. when he clocked a motorist speeding in the other direction. Smith pulled into a median turn-around and then out onto eastbound Highway 2.

At that point the Chevy Tahoe Smith was driving was rear ended by a car driven by a 69-year-old man from Red Lake Falls. After the collision the Mazda 3 that struck Smith rolled and ended up in the ditch.

Both men were injured in the collision and taken to a local hospital with what are described as non-life threatening injuries. No word on if charges will be filed in the incident.
