BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. - Brooklyn Park firefighters were forced to call in reinforcements to help them battle a blaze that destroyed a home and jumped to a nearby field.

Crews from Brooklyn Center, Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Moundsview, Andover and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) converged on the scene trying to contain the fire, which began in the back of a home on the 10100 block of Georgia Avenue North in Brooklyn Park.

Sources on the scene say two adults and two children inside the home escaped safely but the structure became fully engulfed. Flames soon jumped to a dry grassy field at nearby Oak Grove Park and began quickly spreading.

By late morning crews had the grass fire put down, but not before an estimated 25 acres had been blackened. Fire officials warn people across the metro that conditions are ripe Thursday for similar incidents. They advise no open fires, and urge smokers to dispose of their cigarette butts responsibly.

In fact the city of St. Cloud on Thursday morning announced a total ban on open burning until conditions improve.
