MINNETONKA, Minn. - Gophers men's basketball forward Trevor Mbakwe was arrested for DWI over the summer.

The University of Minnesota graduate student was stopped just after 2:30 a.m. on July 1 by a Minnetonka police officer. Police records state Mbakwe was pulled over after he failed to yield to the officer who was responding to a burglary in progress. The officer had his lights on and siren activated, the report states.

Mbakwe was pulled over on Interstate 394 near the exit ramp to southbound I-494. He was listed as the only occupant in the car. His preliminary breath test showed a 0.116 blood alcohol content.

According to the police report, Mbakwe told the officer he was looking for a place to stop and apologized for not stopping. The report also states Mbakwe said he "hadn't had much alcohol, one beer."

Mbakwe was booked at the Minnetonka Police Department where he underwent chemical testing. The results from his urine test showed Mbakwe had a 0.12 BAC.

Court records show Mbakwe served two days in the Hennepin County Workhouse and was sentenced to 16 hours of community service. He is also on supervised probation until September of 2013.

Talking about the arrest for the first time at Friday's annual media day, Gophers head coach Tubby Smith said Mbakwe is lucky to still be on the team following the arrest. "Trevor has a possibility of having a livelihood in this profession and playing basketball," Smith said. "I wanted to make sure we gave him an opportunity as long as does the things that we expect and require him to do."

Mbakwe is entering his third season with the Gophers. Mbakwe was granted another season of eligibility after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee last November causing him to miss most of the 2011-12 season.

The Gophers season gets underway with the team's Gopher All-Star Friday Night festivities at Williams Arena.
