MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Timberwolves will be without star forward Kevin Love for 6 to 8 weeks, according to team officials.
The team says that Love broke his hand while working out Wednesday morning. They say that Love will go to New York this week for a second opinion on his injury.
Love had 24 points and eight rebounds in Minnesota's 114-81 victory over Maccabi Haifa on Tuesday night.
The team made the announcement after practice, saying Love broke the third and fourth metacarpals on his shooting hand during a morning workout.
It's a crushing blow to the Timberwolves, who already will be without star point guard Ricky Rubio for at least the first six weeks while he recovers from a torn ACL in his left knee.
Love will join Ricky Rubio on the bench to start the season. Rubio is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last season.
Love is a two-time All-Star who led the team in scoring and rebounding last season. He also played a key role in Team USA's march to the gold medal in the London Olympics.
The injury likely means more playing time for Derrick Williams.
