MINNEAPOLIS - The Philip Nelson era has begun earlier than Minnesota expected. The Gophers not only made the move to the freshman from Mankato to keep a healthy quarterback behind center, but they're getting a head start on next season and beyond.

Coach Jerry Kill mentions almost daily how young his team is. While the defense consists of mostly upperclassmen, the injury-ravaged offense is sure inexperienced. Nelson is one of 11 true freshmen who've been used by the Gophers this season, including all-purpose player K.J. Maye, running back Rodrick Williams Jr. and wide receiver Andre McDonald.

The Gophers (4-3, 0-3) are still looking for their first Big Ten victory. They host Purdue (3-4, 0-3). The Boilermakers are in the same position.
