MINNEAPOLIS - A Twin Cities native waiting out hurricane Sandy in her apartment says she is ready to move to a neighborhood shelter if the need arrives.
Lindsay Hanson moved to New York two years ago with her husband, Scott Goldberg, a former KARE 11 reporter.
Hanson spent Monday working from home on Manhattan's Lower East Side, after her employer closed down the office. She's outside the mandatory evacuation order, but said she is ready to go. "Obviously my hope is there's no need to leave. I do live a couple blocks from a shelter."
Hurricanes were not something Hanson considered when she and her husband moved to New York, but this is already her second - coming on the heels of last year's hurricane Irene. "No, I didn't anticipate contending with hurricanes and I have to tell you it wouldn't have been an attraction," she said.
Karen Mandile of Excelsior is also waiting out the storm, in a fourth story condo in Ocean City, Maryland. Mandile left last week for a long weekend away with friends and wound up in the path of the storm.
"The tops of the light posts, they all flew off just a little bit ago. The winds really strong, you can kind of hear it, it sounds like a tornado in here all the time," she said Monday evening by phone for the her ocean-side condo.
Mandile admitted to being a little scared. "I saw the tides going up in two hours," she said. "It's kind of frightening because it's supposed to get worse and then the flooding is going to come. "
