BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The first day of the firearms deer opener is off to a tragic start in northern Minnesota following the death of a hunter.
Around 9 a.m. Saturday, the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office received a report that a deer hunter had been shot by another hunter in Section 16 of Turtle River Township in rural Bemidji.
Deputies discovered a male victim dead at the scene. Another hunter, who was an acquaintance of the man, was questioned and released. Authorities say they were on public land but not hunting together.
Both men are from the Bemidji area. The victim's name has not been released.
The incident remains under investigation. An autopsy is pending.
