ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Ramsey County Attorney's Office has declined to press charges against a young mother who allegedly left her 3-month old baby alone in a car while she went into a bar to drink.
Prosecutors say they don't think they have enough evidence to charge the mother.
According to police, the 23-year-old woman tried to bring the infant into an establishment on the 400 block of South Robert Street in St. Paul shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday, but a bartender said the baby couldn't stay.
Witnesses say the woman walked outside, put her baby in the vehicle, then came back inside the bar and drank at least one shot to celebrate a friend's birthday. Someone who saw the child alone in the car called police.
A customer confronted the suspect as she tried to leave the bar, but she managed to drive off. Police said they pulled the suspect over a short time later and arrested her.
Investigators are trying to determine exactly how long the baby was alone in the vehicle.
The case is being sent back to the St. Paul Police who have the option of presenting case to the City Attorney's Office.
