PRIOR LAKE, Minn. - They've been dry since opening Minnesota's most successful casino operation in 1992, but beginning Wednesday Mystic Lake Casino Hotel will begin selling beer, wine and liquor.

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) announced that alcohol sales will first be offered in Mystic Steakhouse, Meadows Bar & Grille, and meeting and convention areas of the casino complex. It will be expanded to locations near the gaming floor over the next month.

"Adding alcohol service to the Mystic Lake experience has been the most frequent request made by our guests for many years," said Edward Stevenson, president and chief executive officer of the SMSC Gaming Enterprise, which runs Mystic Lake. "We've studied the idea very carefully as we've evolved toward a casino resort atmosphere over the past several years."

The tribe say it has received all necessary approvals from the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety to begin alcohol sales. The SMSC and the SMSC Gaming Enterprise have also consulted with local governments and law enforcement agencies to help prepare for the change.

Casino staff have all received mandated training in the sales of alcohol, and management says an estimated 70 jobs will be created to support the expected increase in business.

"We're glad to offer this amenity to enhance the experience for our guests who choose to drink and who do so responsibly," added Stevenson.
