ST. PAUL, Minn. - It's not the eye-catching glamorous stuff like girders and spans, but crews will be hauling huge piles of dirt and other materials to an area near where the new St. Croix bridge project will be constructed.

Motorists will see dump trucks and piles of material in the vicinity of the Beach Road ramp off eastbound Highway 36 in Oak Park Heights beginning this week.

The piles of dirt, called surcharge, will be monitored throughout the winter to measure the weight-bearing ability of soils beneath the piles. The data will provide information for future construction on the site.

Additional prep work this fall will see crews construct a parking lot for use by the city of Oak Park Heights and Phil's Club Tara restaurant. The parking lot will be located east of the restaurant and will replace parking spaces lost due to changes in the frontage road.

More information on the prep work and the St. Croix Crossing project is available on the Mn/DOT websites. You can also follow the St. Croix Crossing Facebook page.
