LAKEWOOD, CO - A police officer in Lakewood, Colorado is dead after being shot by a fellow officer during a search for a burglary suspect Friday morning.
Just before 2 a.m., Lakewood Police were called to the scene of a possible burglary at a home on the border of Lakewood and neighboring Edgewater when a hailstorm of shots were reportedly fired. The officer was apparently caught in the crossfire and died from a fellow officer's bullet.
"The words heartbreak and shock just aren't adequate when you describe losing one of your own," said Steve Davis of the Lakewood Police Department. "This is the worst of the worst. You never want to lose your own people."
Three suspects were taken into custody after the incident. They face a number of felony charges.
The victim is described as being in his mid-30s, a six-year veteran of the force. It's believed he is the first officer killed on duty since the department was founded back in 1969.
