MINNEAPOLIS - A Twin Cities man is charged with kidnapping and domestic assault in the alleged abduction of his daughter from an apartment in St. Louis Park.
A criminal complaint filed Tuesday details the felony charges against 31-year-old George Jermaine Rutledge, who stands accused of strangling his estranged girlfriend and taking off with their one-year-old baby girl.
Police were called to an apartment complex on the 1300 block of Jersey Avenue in St. Louis Park shortly after 7:30 p.m. on November 8. When officers arrived they spoke with Rutledge's girlfriend, who told them he had been drinking heavily, pushed her on the couch and began strangling her. She said he grabbed the baby and ran from the apartment.
Police were unable to locate the suspect and issued an Amber Alert.
Investigators soon learned that Rutledge had his estranged girlfriend's phone and traced it to Anoka County. There, they talked to several witnesses who had seen him with the little girl. They eventually located Rutledge at the home of a known girlfriend in Blaine and took him into custody.
The resident of the home told police Rutledge had just shown up with the girl, and told her the child's mother was in treatment.
The 1-year-old was returned home unharmed.
If found guilty of kidnapping George Rutledge could face a 20-year prison sentence.
