NEW BRIGHTON, Minn. - For Tara Canfield the kitchen is the heart of her home. But there was a big problem: It was too small.

"It was nice. It was just too small for my large family," she said.

Canfield is the single mother of nine kids, the majority of them are special needs. Without her knowing a friend nominated her for a kitchen makeover from the Rachael Ray Show.

"They called me one day and said 'you've been nominated for a kitchen makeover' and I kind of chuckled a little bit because I needed one," she said.

Canfield needed one badly. For a family of ten there was just one tiny table that seated six and the floor was unfinished. For a decade she tried to fix it but life got in the way. Rachael Ray's team came in and transformed it in just five days.

"It's beyond words. It's amazing. It's incredible. It's home," Canfield said.

One top of brand new appliances there are slam proof cabinet doors which Justus Canfield, the oldest of the kids, loves. What he loves more is finally being able to sit at the table and eat with his siblings.

"Before I'd mainly be standing, helping, walking around dishing out the food to everyone and then eat when everyone went to sleep," the high school senior said.

There's room for all of them to eat at the table together now and they aren't wasting time inviting family and friends over for Thanksgiving this year.

"It was like an unfinished dream and here I am. I'm really thankful. I have a lot to be thankful this Thanksgiving," Canfield said.

The Rachael Ray episode featuring the Canfield family aired Tuesday November 13th but you can catch it on the show's web archive.
