LUTSEN, Minn. - A substantial investment in new snowmaking equipment will help allow Lutsen Mountains to open on Saturday.
Officials say they have a goal of having all of the primary runs open before the Christmas.
There will be skiing and snowboarding on Lutsen's Ullr Mountain this weekend with additional runs and lifts opening as temperatures and snowmaking permit.
The purchase of 32 new SMI Pole Cat snow guns doubled Lutsen's fleet of high-efficiency guns, is proving better conditions while reducing the carbon footprint. The snow-making machines use less electricity and water, but make more snow, officials say.
These snowmaking machines are each equipped with their own mini weather stations, which measure temperature and humidity to automatically adjust the optimum mixture of air and water flow.
