OAK GROVE, Minn. - Toni Porter knows all about the twists and turns on County Highway 9 in Oak Grove, but until Saturday afternoon, she had never seen an accident on that stretch until of road.
She was coming home from a coffee shop with her family when she saw a car swerving back and forth.
"We didn't think anything of it really, and I watched in my mirror as she (the driver) went straight off this corner," Porter said.
The driver went off the road, hit a sign, got stuck in a ditch and then the car started on fire, Porter said.
"Once the fire caught, I knew it was not going to be good," she said.
Porter, her boyfriend and two other drivers turned their cars around to help.
They found a woman and her child inside with the door still locked. Porter said they tried to talk to the driver, but she didn't cooperate.
"She just kept trying to drive. She was like completely incoherent in the passenger seat. Didn't understand why there was someone standing outside her window," Porter said.
She said they repeatedly told the woman she needed to get out. Once the child in the car realized the danger he crawled to the back door and unlocked the vehicle.
Porter said they dragged the boy out first and then the mother. They were pulled out just as fire engulfed the car.
Porter said she's glad it was broken glass and shredded tires instead of flowers or a memorial left at the scene.
"It was by grace of good definitely. Very grateful that we were able to help her," Porter said.
According to the Anoka County Sheriff's office, the driver has been arrested on charges of driving under the influence.
