NEW PRAGUE, MINN. - A young marine from New Prague killed in action is being remembered as someone determined to make a difference in the world.
Lance Cpl. Dale Means, 23, was serving his first tour of Afghanistan when he was killed Sunday during combat operations, according to the Department of Defense.
News of his death spread quickly among those who knew him. Means graduated from New Prague High School five years ago. He married his high school sweetheart Andrea just last October. The two moved to North Carolina where his base was.
Don Plaisance, Means' former industrial tech teacher, said he watched Means grow from a shy and young student to an outgoing young man. He said Means was interested in automotives and driven to make his dreams come true.
"He was going to do something that he wanted to do and fulfill that part of his life to serve the country. I'm proud of him for doing that," Plaisance said.
Funeral arrangements are still being worked out. Meanwhile KARE 11 learned Mean's mother-in-law left for North Carolina Monday to be with his young widow.
