HUDSON, Wis. - Prosecutors say a man killed his three daughters in River Falls last July in order to hurt his ex-wife.

While there has been rampant speculation about the motive behind the deaths of the three girls, Wednesday's court proceedings were the first time authorities have commented publicly on Aaron Schaffhausen's motive.

Schaffhausen faces three counts of first-degree intentional homicide for the deaths of 11-year-old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia. All three girls were found tucked into their beds with their throats slit.

Prosecutors have also charged Schaffhausen with arson, saying he doused the home with gasoline and attempted to set it on fire.

Also Wednesday, a St. Croix County judge denied a number of motions by Schaffhausen's attorney to dismiss murder charges. The defense team was also told they have until Dec. 14 to file a motion to plead not guilty by reason of insanity, and until Dec. 28 to request a change of venue.

The defense also discussed a motion asking to ban cameras from the courtroom.

Schaffhausen faces mandatory life in prison if convicted. The judge could grant him a chance at parole, however.
