LITTLE FALLS, Minn. - A Little Falls man is in custody after he told police he shot and killed two teenagers who were allegedly breaking into his home.
"It's just a tragic thing," says John Lange, a friend of the 64-year-old man. "He's a very nice guy who just keeps to himself."
The sheriff's department confirms that deputies visited the home on Friday afternoon after receiving a suspicious behavior call. It's then when the homeowner confessed to killing two people the previous day. Authorities found two bodies in the basement.
"I can't believe how all this happened," says Adam Monnette.
Monnette confirms the identities of the two victims as 18-year-old Haile Kifer and 17-year-old Nick Brady. The two are cousins and both attend Little Falls High School.
"Nick was a happy guy and a really caring guy," says Monnette. "This is all pretty senseless."
Authorities aren't confirming if the two had been breaking in at the time of the shooting, but Lange says the home has had several break-ins in recent months.
"I think he just couldn't deal with it anymore," says Lange. "Why he didn't call the cops right away, I don't know."
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the scene and officials confirm a preliminary investigation has led authorities to arrest the man for second-degree murder.
A court appearance is expected on Monday.
