Best Buy offers smart nursery products

Best Buy launches new baby products

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -  Technology is making it easier for parents to keep an eye on their small children. And Best Buy has launched some new devices to help parents keep their little ones healthy.

The Snuza breathing monitor is one of the gadgets Best Buy now offers as part of its new collection of Internet-connected nursery devices. Best Buy Geek Squad Agent Noelle St. Andrew says the breathing monitors are among the three most popular.

"It monitors abdominal movement. If they haven’t breathed in about 20 seconds (parents) will get an alert to their phone," she said. "This technology is making sure we know what is going on with our children. Especially the little ones that can't speak for themselves."

Most, if not all, of the devices are compatible with Androids and iPhones. The second on the list is a device that allows you to monitor your child’s fever in real time. It will send alerts to your cell phone, too. It's called Fever Scout.

They also have a variety of  baby monitors that allow parents to view activity of their child when away from home. Parents like Iola Peterson understand the things toddlers do. She has a 2-year-old son. She welcomes the extra help but says parents shouldn’t get comfortable.

"He is exploring everything. He is everywhere and into everything," she said. "I think it is a good thing but a bad thing at the same time. When you are too reliant on the device you may not pay as much attention as you would’ve others."

Indeed, these are not tools to replace parenting but something to give extra help.

"When you have kids running around, life can get difficult. Technology can simplify that," St. Andrew said.

The devices are now available in all Best Buy stores across the country.
